Lightspark 0.5.3 released

There's a fresh release for the Lightspark Flash player, the third one on an approximately monthly schedule.

Most new changes in 0.5.3 are robustness and portability fixes and a working Windows port, the vast majority of it being done by Matthias Gehre.

Coverage of the testsuite from the Tamarin VM is also progressing well.

The source tarball and .exe installer are found on Launchpad

Ubuntu user can get updated packages from the daily PPA for Natty and Oneiric.

You can follow the development version and contribute on github.

Lightspark 0.5.1 released

After over two months of work since 0.5.0 by a handful of developers, there's finally a new release of Lightspark, the (other) open source Flash player. Unlike Gnash, Lightspark supports the AVM2 virtual machine and the newest versions of SWF files, while falling back to Gnash when it encounters SWF8 or earlier content.

News for users

For users, the most visible change is that YouTube is working again - their player keeps getting updated and sometimes it introduces Flash APIs or VM opcodes which are not fully implemented in Lightspark, resulting in breakage.

Flowplayer had been made to work in this cycle.

EGL/GLES2 based rendering has been added so it can run at reasonable speeds on ARM hardware where there is generally no support for hardware accelerated desktop OpenGL.

Less crashes due to the many small and large fixes added.

News for the project

Alessandro, the main author and original maintainer of the project is taking a break for a few months, so most development and project management in this cycle has been done by the existing contributors.

The Lightspark team is planning to release new versions monthly from now on, to get the fixes out sooner.

We also plan to move away from the sourceforge.net homepage and wiki, and manage the project using only two instead of three hosting services :)

The release is already available in Debian Sid and Ubuntu Oneiric and there are daily builds available in the team's PPA for Ubuntu Natty and Oneiric. The upstream code is progressing rapidly and does not really add regressions so using these daily packages is pretty safe and also helps a lot with testing.

Public tender of about 3mil EUR explicitly disqualifies 'GPL and similar' software

There's a government procurement bid going on in Romania for creating the software and infrastructure to modernize criminal records' access within the country and to interoperate with European countries' similar systems.

It is likely to become one of the many overpriced, poorly specified and poorly implemented solutions that are cranked out by companies that would not survive in the private sector but are close to the decision-makers and are tacitly supported by large IT companies whose proprietary software and expensive hardware have key roles such projects. Nothing new here.

What sets it apart however from other cases, at least to my knowledge is that in the general requirements section there's a small paragraph stating:

"All versions of sofware that are part of the offer must not be published under a 'free software license' - GPL or similar"

So far, while definitely the exceptions, there still were Apache, MySQL or Linux server deployments under the umbrella of various public projects but I have not seen cases of explicitly forbidding open source software in a project's requirement.
There were phrasings such as 'must run well in .NET/Win2003' which could be explained by lack of awareness of other platforms but this is very explicit, without a rationale given.

The 101 page requirements document is so obviously put together by people who have little knowledge of technology but who make up for that by generous use of enterprise buzzwords and ridiculous requirements (DB must allow storage of large quantities of records for ex a 100 million, system must run SQL commands without locking the whole table but only affected records) that all the silliness in it is not even funny.

I am not sure if it is entirely financed by the Romanian government or EU funds are sunk into it as well, but either way, sigh.

Ironically the criterion for picking the winner of the tender is 'lowest price'.

Avaaz.org is a successful online community of over 5 million participants that often gathers signatures and donations for various causes - wildlife and environment preservation, revealing corruption, opposing exaggerated corporate lobbies, etc.

Many of their campaigns are raising awareness of women and girls being severely mistreated and threatened in various places in the world. Since gender inequality is a recurring topic on the planets, some may be interested in contributing to campaigns against systematic and even legally allowed abuse and discrimination; the latter is a much greater problem than those that the occasional disgruntled, tactless, supposedly funny or even blissfully unaware male geeks cause, making the FOSS world seem like a hostile place to women.

"Standing desk"

As an experiment to see if it alleviates slight back pains, for the past four weeks I have been working standing. I don't use an actual standing desk but rather stacked a lot of cardboard boxes on my regular desk, then put the monitor, laptop, keyboard and mouse on top of them. It doesn't look good at all, so I won't provide a picture. Besides, the boxes carry the names and logos of various manufacturers and I don't want to spoil the post with product placement :)

The mouse sometimes falls on the floor but otherwise the setup is great.

I don't plan to go back to using a chair for computer work anytime soon.

Even if I stand 8-10 hours my legs don't mind and my back feels a lot better now. I felt improvements after a few days already. The lower back pain went away and there is almost no bother higher along the spine where I used to ache sometime after sitting - having a very bad posture, I admit, even though the chair is somewhat ergonomic.

I also feel like I can concentrate better standing but this may be unrelated.

Up until two months ago, had I been asked the question "Which is the open source project that you are least likely to ever contribute to?", I would have, without hesitation answered OpenOffice.org. Here by open source project I of course mean one of the reasonably popular ones not any random homework that has a COPYING file attached and uploaded to the internet.

One of the barriers is of course the large and mostly legacy C++ codebase, but in the case of OpenOffice it was a lack of a real independent community in charge of the project and the extensive control Sun had that made contributing unattractive. I have not experienced it first hand, but the fact that the project had such a reputation is probably telling of the manner in which it was ran. So do the piles of patches distributors had to maintain out of tree.

But since the LibreOffice fork the answer to that question is different. The OpenOffice people that initiated it made a few nice changes in order to break down the barriers.

dropped the annoying contributor agreements
restructured and migrated the code-base to git repositories (about 20, because of performance considerations apparently) on freedesktop.org
started maintaining a very active wiki with potential easy tasks for newcomers and are very welcoming and helpful on the mailing list and IRC

I have also sent a trivial cleanup patch in that was accepted, so now I know that if I ever have an annoying bug in LibreOffice I will not treat it with a shrug as I would do with proprietary software and as until now but will feel confident diving in the code.

I'll also send a few more patches in of course, the list of tasks is huge.

Office software is unlikely to get one laid and I suspect the motivation of many of new contributors since the fork happened partly comes from seeing the project freed from corporate bureaucracy and a desire to show that better software can be created if it is ran as other meritocratic projects.

Video uploads from the next Shotwell

Shotwell trunk allows downloading movie files from cameras and playing them, as it makes sense to catalogue videos and photos in the same app, using an unified interface.

My patches to enable uploading videos to YouTube and Picasaweb albums from Shotwell have recently been tweaked and accepted upstream so the list of things I am missing in this great application has just shrinked significantly :)

Scopul principal al distribuției Kiwi Linux este de a face Linux cât mai atractiv pentru începători și de a-i introduce în lumea softului liber și în comunitățile aferente. Succesul distibuției e definit de câți utilizatori de Windows sau complet începători în ale calculatoarelor rămân plăcut impresionați și interesați de Linux în urma contactului. Dacă Kiwi e doar primul pas și ulterior aleg Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo sau orice alt sistem free software, tot succes îl consider.

Kiwi oferă ceva - chiar dacă puțin - în plus față de distribuțiile menționate mai sus prin simplificarea configurării și setupului inițial, prin timpul mai scurt în care ai un sistem cu aproape toate funcționalitățile active și prin evitarea căutărilor sau confuziei datorate lipsei acestora.

Mă găndesc care ar fi metoda cea mai bună de a continua să oferim o astfel de soluție pentru utilizatorii locali așa că am pus un poll cu 3 întrebări în engleză aici . Aș reduce frecvența edițiilor (până la urmă a fi la zi nu e o prioritatepentru majoritatea începătorilor, altfel nu ar folosi încă Windows XP) dacă ar fi semnale mai clare legat de ce lipsește din setupul actual care ar putea face și mai ușoară sau plăcută adopția - aplicații instalate implicit, configurări specifice unor scenarii sau medii de lucru/școală. Dacă adunăm căteva idei clare am putea continua pe 10.08 LTS (sau 10.10) cu updaturi timp de un an sau doi și să ne concentrăm pe aplicații specifice locului lăsând sistemul de bază stabil.

Cine are idei și dorește să contribuie la răspândirea softului liber în România prin Kiwi e invitat să le detalieze în poll, nu neapărat în engleză. Mai încolo le discutăm și pe listă.

Finally, after a hiatus of over a year, the Ubuntu derivative tailored for Romanian and Hungarian Linux beginners is having a new release! Of course English is still available on the CD :)

Here is the iso (700M)

Its focus is to provide much of the commonly needed software conveniently installed by default but without straying away from Ubuntu in looks or by forming a separate community. These two decisions were made in order to keep those that see or use both distributions on a familiar ground.

Kiwi Linux 10.08 is based on Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS and as always it only comes in GNOME x86 Desktop CD edition.

The main differences from Ubuntu are in the default application lineup. The decision to switch out some components are based on my own usage and on input from a subset of the Ubuntu-RO community.

Chromium instead of Firefox because it is snappier, more stable, has built-in page translations, and has a cleaner albeit at first non-intuitive UI. HTML5 video codecs included.
Shotwell instead of F-Spot - a nice fast tool, it is happening in Ubuntu 10.10 as well.
Pidgin instead of Empathy - while I am sure that Empathy and the Telepathy stack is the way in the future, Pidgin is more mature at this point.
VLC 1.1.3 along with Totem . VLC just handles better regular movies, DVDs, and subtitles. Totem is kept because Chromium annoyingly (but wisely) does not support Mozilla browser plugins that don't use XEmbed and are written instead in the old way using X Intrinsics.
Adobe Flashplugin and the gstreamer ungood bunch for mp3 and various other codecs.
Libdvdcss2 for encrypted DVD support
Evolution removed as most home users are on webmail. The nice desktop-webmail helper app included
p7zip and rar tools added to help file-roller deal with archives sent by Windows users.
Gnote instead of Tomboy - more or less equivalent
Compiz extra settings config
Firmware to support the Speedtouch 330 USB modem driver - the initial reason to create this derivative is still shipped on the CD, but now fewer people need it having migrated to saner ISP connection equipment.
Removed Mono, Erlang + CouchDB, Telepathy, Gwibber - as space needed to be freed for the above software the ones that were removed are those I considered stuff for more savvy users and less used by beginners.

The rest are small changes - custom liveCD boot screen and plymouth theme just to make it clear this is not 100% Ubuntu and no confusion arises in case of support issues.

The Launchpad PPAs are a great help, I copied VLC and Shotwell from Nate Muench's and Yorba's PPAs to the Kiwi release PPA where the custom packages are kept as well (Ubiquity slideshow and Plymouth theme only).

Ubuntu CD syslinux boot splash question

Does anyone reading this know what program was used to create the splash.pcx file that is the first thing coming up when the CD boots? It has a small text in the new font saying 'ubuntu' with a subtle glow around the text. My trials as a beginning GIMP user to recreate it using the text 'kiwi linux' resulted in a coarser look of the font after glow and a blur effects were applied and the palette is disturbed leading to the menu items having a dark purple background.

If the original was done using Gimp or Inkscape and someone knows the steps to achieve that effect - that exact effect in that image, not glowing effects in general as I have looked at a few tutorials before trying my hand at it - I'd be grateful if they shared their tips in the comments.

Maybe the original needs to be done in a certain way so that it can be converted to pcx and 256 colors without loss of quality.

Odată instalat aceste ultime neajunsuri estetice nu mai afectează sistemul, sunt vizibile doar în timpul instalării. Intenționat artworkul și majoritatea brandingului e cel al Ubuntu să fie familiar celor care văd ambele sisteme.

Preparing for the next Kiwi Linux

After one release skipped (9.10) and another postponed several times (10.04) Kiwi Linux is starting to look like the Duke Nukem Forever of the distro landscape. However I hope there will be a new edition soon, probably in August, based on Ubuntu 10.04.1

Along with the regular support for multimedia codecs and localization for Romanian and Hungarian on the CD the major changes in this one are probably going to be the replacing of Firefox and F-Spot with Chromium and Shotwell in the default install. I am ambivalent about introducing Gnote - it is fast and I am happy using it but it seems to be going through unmaintenance again (but who am I to throw stones right?)

Manifestul lansat de peste o săptămână de Bogdan Manolea are deja peste 100 de semnatari, dar e evident că sunt mult mai multe persoane, asociații sau firme care

interacționează deja cu softurile și siturile web făcute de sau pentru stat
știu ce sunt formatele de date și standardele deschise
utilizează și chiar participă în dezvoltarea de conținut (documentație, hărți, articole, software, grafică, fotografii, muzică) sub licențe liberale ce sunt în beneficiul publicului larg
știu bine ce e internetul și avantajele colaborării pe seturi de date deschise
cunosc avantajele reutilizării datelor și softului de calitate în loc de reconstruirea lor de la zero
vor ca procesul prin care cele 500M euro planificați pentru fi cheltuiți pentru proiectele e-Romania de dezvoltare soft și portaluri pentru interacțiunea cetățean-stat să fie transparent și mai ales să producă ceva util

Ar trebui ca acea scrisoare deschisă ce va fi trimisă la MCSI după 14 aprilie să aibă aproape același număr de semnături ca numărul acestor persoane.

Semnați și dați mai departe linkul, semnatarii nu trebui să fie doar antreprenori, profesori, bloggeri populari, ci oricine e de acord în mare cu ce scrie în acel manifest. Nu e perfect și nu are sens să vă legați de un paragraf pe care l-ați completa sau l-ați șterge de acolo, dar e cea mai concretă inițiativă de până acum din țară de a da un semnal ministerului că nu ne convine risipa de bani publici și calitatea proastă a softului produs pâna acum în proiecte asemănătoare.

Deci dacă puteți vorbi despre GPL și CC la o bere și puteți sta ore să discutați pe forumuri cu cineva care nu întelege despre ce e vorba cu Linuxul sau OpenOffice, puneți mâna și semnați manifestul (se timite mail cu datele voastre la semnatura@apti.ro, nu e anonim), e cel mai puțin ce puteți face! :)

Anunțați pe liste, grupuri, forum, blog, twitter, facebook și unde mai credeți. Dacă nu faceți asta acum, în viitor NU AVEȚI DREPTUL să vă mai plângeți că nu puteți accesa un site oficial în browserul preferat sau că nu vă merge pe Linux aplicația dată de la administrația financiară, casa de asigurări sau alte oficii.

Dau placă de bază OLPC alpha

Am o placă din 2006 ani care era prototip alpha pentru laptopul XO al proiectului OLPC.

Nu am folosit-o demult și nu mai am cablul de alimentare pentru ea :(

Are 3 porturi USB, slot audio in/out, wireless cu antene ce se atașează, ieșire VGA, 128 M RAM și procesor AMD Geode compatibil x86.

Are pe el LinuxBIOS și cred că și Linux.

Placa nu mai e suportată oficial de OLPC și merge doar cu firmware mai vechi.

Horses update and Google Buzz

Since last night almost 500 mails were sent in total from the 'Horse Ride' app.

According to the group's tweets at one point there were only 35 MEPs more left to convince, which is good progress, but there is less than a day until deadline. Too bad they do not update the list of signatories in real time.

Feel free to be skeptical about any such initiative but if only laziness prevents you from contacting MEPs try the app yourself and tell your friends who have Gmail :)

Among the positive replies from MEP's assistants I got a negative but very well written one from a UKIP member. It was quoted in the previous blog post's comments by another user if you are curious. I thought the UK only had the traditional Tory and Labour plus that crazy far right party as seen in the documentary 'All white in Barking' , but this UKIP looks nice (as political parties go) after a quick visit to Wikipedia. I did not look further as I am not living or voting in the UK.

I used Google Buzz a few minutes ago 'buzzing' this app's URL and had an immediate effect - one more user contacting MEPs. Looks much more useful to me personally than Twitter, I mostly want to share things with people I already know rather than build up a following of strangers as Twitter encourages.

Here's a request for some armchair activism that takes about 2 minutes.

The World Horse Welfare international charity is trying to get at least half of the members of the European Parliament to sign a written declaration that would be a step towards eliminating the long distance transportation of horses before slaughter. You can read more about it on their website linked above.

Using Google App Engine and with my Web 2.0 design skills cranked up to eleven I made an app that helps a Google Account owner quickly send an email to each representative of her/his country, because asking MEPs to sign is the most effective way of making them aware of Declaration 54/2009.

The usual copy pasting of email bodies and Cc: lists from .doc and .xls documents takes a bit more time and likely constitutes a too high barrier for many except those really into a certain cause. There is a time and place for opportunistic activism as well, and it is nice to have tools automating the boring parts.

The deadline is tomorrow and a few dozens of MEPs still need to sign.

Nu e vorba de sequel la 'Snakes on a plane' ci de o campanie a unei fundații vechi de 80 de ani pentru a preveni transportatul cailor pe distanțe prea lungi în Europa înainte de a-i tăia pentru salam.

Detalii pe situl lor. 50%+1 europarlamentari trebuie să semneze declarația 54/2009 pentru a fi promovată. Din cei 30 MEP din România 12 au semnat deja și ata limită e 11 februarie. Pentru a semna trebuie sa afle de declarație de exemplu prin mail sau telefon.

De pe site se poate lua un șablon .doc și adresele și numele din un .xls, compune și trimite mailul clasic dar asta e barieră prea mare de obicei.

O alternativă ce ia mai puțin de un minut e mers aici introdus numele și dat pe Send. E nevoie de cont google, de obicei adresă GMail e destulă.

Două speranțe FOSS/RO pe 2010

1. Sper că până la sfârșitul acestui an va exista un proiect cu contribuții semnificative din RO, sau chiar inițiat aici care va ajunge popular (adică shipped in Ubuntu și Fedora). Până acum contribuțiile sunt în principal în localizare, proiecte de învățat prea specializate și nefinisate sau în soluții semi-comerciale.
2. Sper că cei care contribuie la planet linux360 ro să aibă un an mai bun și în consecință mai puține frustrări pe care să le verse inconștient și nedrept pe categorii care nu se pot apăra, postând conținut rasist, antisemit, homofob sau misogin care BTW când sunt exprimate la condițional optativ intersectează legea 278/2006 Art. 317. - Instigarea la ură pe temei de etc...

După schimbările din '96 și '04, care s-au dovedit a nu fi (și e logic și normal așa) la nivelul așteptărilor mele, în sfârșit m-am prins că nu se schimbă mare lucru doar de la un președinte, chiar dacă e cel pe care l-am votat și eu. Nu aveam intenția să merg la vot acum și să am iluzia că mi-am făcut datoria de cetățean pe următorul cincinal. Dar cum contrar așteptărilor Remus a reușit să adune peste 200.000 de semnături, mă duc.

M-am hotărât până la urmă că prefer votul după conștiință votului util și voi vota candidatul cu care aparent am cele mai multe idei în comun. Știu că din asta se poate deduce că eu consider că ideile mele sunt mai bune decât ale altora și că atitudinea asta de 'președintele să fie ca noi' e motivul pentru care suntem în situația în care suntem, dar nu am ce face :)

De fapt consider și acest vot 'util', doar că nu pe termen foarte scurt și pe scala binară iese/nu iese președinte, ci prin faptul că e un vot pentru viitorul în care internetul neutru și nu televiziunile de partid sunt forma principală de informare și mobilizare, în care deși vom fi încă ființe emotive și iraționale vom fi conștienți de acest lucru și vom rezista tentației de a vota pe cel mai bine pieptănat sau îmbrăcat candidat, și în care în dezbaterile publice va fi accent pe discutat serios și civilizat, cu participarea cât mai ușoară a oricui dorește să se implice. Deci ca în open source, când nu e trolling, flame-war sau maintainer leneș :)

Semnături: 14% adunate și trimise

Acum o lună (cu două posturi mai devreme) scriam entuziasmat despre intenția de a aduna 100 de semnături pentru candidatura lui Remus Cernea. Pe scurt: I failed.

Am adunat la puțin timp 15 semnături într-o zi pe trenul Gherla-Cluj în cca. 40 de minute iar apoi pauză. E mai greu să aduni semnături de la persoane care se deplasează liber în oraș decăt de la unele care nu au unde pleca dintr-un compartiment de tren și au mai puține scuze pentru a refuza. Cei care au semnat erau majoritatea studenți din BN. O persoană a semnat dar nu și-a scris nr de buletin (de aceea 14% in loc de 15%).

Dar motivul principal pentru care nu am mai încercat să adun era că nu mi se părea că Remus Cernea ia în serios acest proiect, și nu puteam să cer convingător cuiva să semneze pentru un candidat despre care știam prea puține și la care unele lucruri mă contrariau:

- situl nu punea la dispoziție celor ce vroiau să participe nici o metodă online de conectare și coordonare. Trebuie scris mail direct la Remus. Atât un mail ce i l-am scris chiar în prima zi, în care întrebam de asta cu intenția de a ajuta cât și un google group ce a fost creat și postat în comentarii pe situl lui au fost ignorate.
În același timp punea clipuri de pe youtube cu dedicații muzicale la suporteri. Dacă el nu e destul de familiar cu internetul nu se poate ca în tot Partidul Verde să nu fie cineva care să fi auzit de liste și forumuri (acum pentru campanie au pus un forum, progres)

- nu se știa (și nici acum nu e public) de unde și cine a adunat câte semnături. Lipsă de transparență totală, dezamăgitor din partea unui candidat asociat cu platformă și minte deschisă.

- tot la lipsa de transparență nu e clar cine îl ajută, numele voluntarilor care fac situl, numără plicurile, e vre-un șef de campanie, alte persoane de contact, știri, blog.

- nu era roadmap: exact când e data finală de predat semnături a fost publicat doar pe la sfârșit și era 23 oct nu 15 cum era scris inițial.

- negativismul aparent: cu toate că nu profita de posibilitățile date de internet, știrile de pe site erau acuze la adresa mass mediei că îl ignoră (hello??! dacă eu dau bani din buzunarul meu să cumpăr un post TV sau un ziar, evident că nu vreau să fac reclamă pozitivă unor persoane sau idei care mă critică sau pun în pericol interesele mele), sau satiră (tras în țeapă sau dat cu roșii în imagini ale politicienilor). Asta merge daca vrei să te distrezi sau să te descarci dar nu au nimic constructiv în ele și sunt risipă de energie.

Oricum se pare că s-au adunat în jur de 210k semnături și candidatura e valabilă. Sunt foarte surprins, date fiind impresia ce o aveam din timpul adunării, exprimată mai sus, dar e o surpriză plăcută. Sper să fie mai puțin ignorat de acum și să ridice unele subiecte în discuțiile unde e invitat.

E greu să câștigi încrederea fără transparență și intențiile descrise clar și actualizate frecvent. Voi încerca să aplic asta mai serios în orice proiect (FOSS cel mai probabil) la care lucrez, că e descurajant să nu știi care e situația unui proiect la care ai vrea să contribui.

Sper că Remus va continua, acum că este aparent atâta suport, campania de a schimba sistemul electoral, cu număr minim de persoane de a fonda partide fiind mult ridicat față de alte țări.

Planuri mici pentru următorul Kiwi

Am curățat bugurile vechi și irelevante din LP, așa că sunt doar 4 deschise.
Mai e de făcut pachet din grafice făcute de Radu Mircea Ilea pentru xsplash, compilat un wubi și eventual portat restoregrub la GRUB 2
Legat de lansare va trebui înainte cu câteva zile să vedem pe ce servere vor fi puse ISOuri.

Pentru că șansele să fac ceva sunt mult mai mari dacă promit, mai ales public, zic aici că voi aduna și trimite cel puțin 100 de semnături din cele 200K ce trebuiesc pentru candidatura la președinție a tipului cu tricou Pink Floyd din partea Partidului Verde. Am auzit de el prima dată ieri pe blogul lui Eddy Petrișor. 200K e un număr foarte mare, comparat cu ce se cere în multe alte țări cu sistem similar.

Aici zice ce e cu campania de adunat.

Cu politica ne-am învățat că în societate bună nu vorbești de ea că majoritatea sunt dezgustați și ne-am mai învățat să votăm răul mai mic din opțiuni sau din ce în ce mai des să nu mergem deloc la vot.

Eu cred că răul mai mare e să acceptăm că avem de ales doar din ce ni se oferă de sus și să ne implicăm cel mult cu un ștampilat la fiecare 4-5 ani și apoi să ne mirăm dacă ceva nu ne mulțumește. Nu are nici o logică să crezi că depunând un efort așa mic, de a pune o ștampilă în cadrul câte unui plimbat de duminică alții îți vor rezolva problemele de acum încolo.

Omul ăsta nu are șanse la președinție dar nu asta e esența, ci când și cât de mult începem să ne implicăm fiecare în ce se întâmplă în loc de a ne lamenta permanent (și aproape toți o facem și auzim asta) de cât de prost se conduc treburile. Dacă cel puțin intră în cursă și auzim și altceva decât aceleași vorbe răsuflate sau certuri copilărești între oameni maturi în campanie, deja e un pas spre o țară mai veselă.

Habar nu am cum adun atâtea semnături că nu cunosc așa multă lume. Va trebui să interacționez cu străini! Auch.

A request regarding ballot rules in your country

This is a request to Ubunteros everywhere for a relatively small-scale crowdsourcing effort.

I'd like to find out what the prerequisites are for someone to be able to run for president in your country, to put in context Romania's electoral law which requests 200K signatures in a country of ~22M inhabitants of which around 17M have voting rights. I have just found out about an independent presidential candidate-candidate who is trying to raise this many signatures in a short period to be able to run, and he mentioned Romania's Electoral law is quite a hurdle in this respect compared to other countries. I like what he says so far but as always I want data to back this up :)

These are called ballot access rules in the US and nomination rules elsewhere, and I am interested in the minimum number of signatures needed and a link to the document or news item that you used as reference.

There's no neat data I could find about this online, Wolphram Alpha and Google Squared do not know, and the info I gathered so far is by googling 'presidential election countryname' and trying to see if anything is mentioned in the news article or wikipedia page. A smarter way of doing this or even pointers to readily available data would be even more helpful but unless you're a UN or EU bureaucrat and can easily find this out in spite of the bureaucracy I doubt there is a quick way.

So if you can spare 3-5 minutes and do a query in your native language because it is definitely more likely to turn on results than English, and post as a reply here I'll be grateful.

What is needed: number of signatures (if my Googling was correct some countries such as France require signatures from 500 elected officials and the Czech Republic from 10 MPs, so it is not always from regular citizens) , the population of the country and the number of people with voting rights, then the link in any language.

My findings so far are Belarus 9.8 M people, 100K signatures needed, Slovakia 5M - 15K, Lithuania 3.6 M - 20K, Afghanistan 28M - 10K.
Obviously feel free to double-check and correct my findings too, or get data for another country and if you live in a monarchy :)

Nu știu cu cine a mai colaborat Stas pentru a face situl http://alege.softwareliber.ro dar mi se pare de departe cea mai bună prezentare online din România a conceptului din câte am văzut până acum. Felicitări autorilor! Ar merita să fie prima pagină a softwareliber.ro , că aceste avantaje și softul e ce interesează pe oameni nu neapărat comunitățile tehnice din spate. Cu un nou tab eventual pentru comunități locale de unde se ajunge la oameni și implicare. Și aspectul e mult mai reușit imho.
Vă urez spor în continuare. Pe liste de mail tot nu mă bag, din ce am văzut în arhive sunt mult prea multe posturi off topic sau threaduri diluate, și au apărut recent câteva mesaje derutate și de-a dreptul agresive care mă țin departe de a mă implica în curând în comunitate. Rămân mailurile cu max 4-5 cc:-uri ;)

The perl and python solutions presented for dumping Firefox current session URLs are not very accurate if you navigate around in the same tab using backwards and forward buttons while remaining on the same domain, as they always print the first visited URL. UPDATE: Actually the python one is as it too uses JSON :)

The JSON data in that sessionstore.js file keeps a list of URLs and an index field of the current one, and the latter is changed by the back/forward navigation.

Using Javascipt we can load that JSON object and manipulate it far more naturally that via regexps. Here's how it is done using the Mozilla JS interpreter smjs that comes in the spidermonkey-bin package. It has no file access libraries so I used this interpreter's readline along with some help from the shell (echo is needed to append a newline to the original input file, otherwise readline() choked.)

I have finally published some 8 year old code which I only kept in backups so far and never got motivated enough to put somewhere visible. But I thought it's a good excuse to test gitorious :)

It is a small set of simple linux commands written in ARM assembly language, inspired by asmutils, which I contributed to in 2001. That was the first open source project I actually sent code to, before that it was a few documentation patches to lkml.

Copied over Pidgin 2.5.7 that fixes the recent Yahoo protocol connection problems from the Pidgin PPA to the Kiwi Linux 9.04 archives, so if you have the latter an upgrade will get it. Nice work Pidgin upstream and Ubuntu packagers :)

Until this version needed by YMSG users gets through ubuntu-updates (or backports) it's a good way to stop confused newbies.

Besides the horrible mailing list interface and issue tracker I have a new reason to dislike Sourceforge. It accepts and OpenID login but then asks you to fill in a long form to associate that ID (from LP in my case) with a 'real account'. No thanks.

Too bad the other large scale hosting services which are much nicer are also at least partly proprietary (github, LP, Google Code).

In the context of writing about the merits of Qt, Aaron Seigo mentions in a comment on his own latest post that 'KDE has single deployments that are bigger than the entire Ubuntu user base'. Conservative estimates put Ubuntu at around 10 million users, which would make said KDE deployments huge. I know of the large Debian+KDE based educational effort for over 50 million brazilian schoolchildren but from what I have read that is planned and deployment has only started.

More generally large Linux or OpenOffice deployments usually make headlines when they are announced but little is written that I could find about actual production use of setups of tens of thousands of seats. I know OLPC has a few hundred thousands in South America, Guadalinex is also quite successful, that China and Russia occasionally appear in the news when someone learns again that they plan a National Linux-based OS, but I cannot think of one coordinated deployment that serves millions of users.

Having KDE, GNOME and various distros advertise such successful stories would help a lot when answering questions from the press or potential users regarding the number of Linux users.

Netbook and smartphone Linux use is on the rise and it counts when thinking about 'developing for Linux platforms' but these are not really deployments in the sense I understood Aaron's words.

OpenOffice.org has this page but few of the entries pass the 10K seat mark, and many are at future tense.

Iau o pauză de la activitățile de promovare de soft liber pe o perioadă nedeterminată, cel puțin până în toamnă. Zilele trecute m-am dezabonat de pe listele tic-lobby si software-liber. Faptul că pe ambele liste liste sunt cel mai prolific postator după statisticile google groups și cu toate astea nu pot arăta mai niciun rezultat m-a determinat să regândesc implicarea mea. Am idei despre promovare destul de de diferite, considerate prea radicale, decât cei cu care am mai discutat așa că în acest moment o colaborare ar fi doar de formă și aș fi un factor de dispută. În plus la partea de care este nevoie multă în acest moment, adică interacțiuni offline nu sunt bun deloc.
Oricum e bine că sunt destule persoane care se ocupă acum de asta și se pare ca e un val de entuziasm și moment bun pentru promovat FOSS în România. Succes! ;)

Localizare in Ziarul Financiar

Am primit azi un link la un articol în ZF şi mi-am amintit că am citit ceva foarte similar acum câteva săptămâni.

În comunitatea free software localizarea e esenţială, aşa se asigură accesul unui număr mai mare de utilizatori nevorbitori de engleză la soft liber. Dar atât documentaţiile cât şi aplicaţiile traduse menţionează autorii textului original care de cele mai multe sunt ori în engleză.

Ziarele româneşti pot îndeplini un rol similar, oferind texte traduse care nu ar fi accesibile multor cititori (deşi cei interesaţi în mediul financiar bănuiesc că pot citi în engleză), dar nu e frumos să nu menţioneze sursa. Pe site nu zice de acest articol în particular, şi nici ceva mai generic despre sindicare şi preluare din surse externe nu am găsit.

Licenţa NYT nu specifică nimic de traduceri doar de distribuţie în forma originală şi e formulată probabil doar pentru locuri unde legile S.U.A. se aplică. Totuşi specificatul sursei e utilă, dacă iţi place ce ai citit să ştii unde să cauţi informaţii similare. Şi e şi indicator al profesionalismului.

Concurs info IT Innovation

La invitația lui Radu Ilea am participat azi ca membru alături de încă 3 persoane în comisia de evaluare la concursul de informatică IT Innovation ediția I, organizat de colegi de-ai lui de la liceul Avram Iancu din Cluj. Am fost la secția software 'clasic', mai era o categorie web separat.
Au fost în jur de 30 de elevi din două județe la cele două categorii, venind cu proiecte de diverse grade de finisaj și coolness, majoritatea lor fiind făcute cu C# și Borland C++ (DOS), și câteva Pascal, Delphi și VC++. Toate au fost dezvoltate și rulau pe Windows, unii le testaseră și cu wine în Ubuntu. Cunoștințele noastre de la întâlnirile CJLUG Paul Bele și Radu Ilea au fost și ei premiați, Paul pentru un proiect la secțiunea web (nu am fost deci nu știu detalii multe), Radu pentru un joc stil asteroids scris in C# + XNA. El și și alții au folosit în proiecte și artwork Creative Commons luat de pe net.

În loc de prezentarea Ubuntu sau Kiwi care era în plan, la sfârșit am vorbit despre avantajele open source pentru programatori în devenire, cu accent pe cititul surselor scrise de programatori experimentați și am sugerat să încerce Python, șă învețe tehnologii cross platform și deschise, să folosească diacritice în interfețe și altele care nu mi le mai amintesc. Au fost CDuri Ubuntu, Kubuntu și Kiwi pentru toată lumea prezentă.

Paul a zis că la astfel de concursuri se merită mers cu prezentări mai mult decât în licee pur și simplu, pentru că aici participanții sunt mai deschiși la învățat lucruri noi. Jumate din sală a zis că folosește și Linux.

Hercules Deluxe Optical Glass webcam support

It seems I only test webcams shortly after a release comes out and have to tweak the binaries :)

For those googling and not finding support for this webcam in linux the good news is it's very much like the Hercules Classic Silver (same image sensor, same bridge, slightly different USB ID), now supported in upstream Gspca and will hopefully make it into Karmic (patch has been filed to LP)

Until then those on Jaunty x86 can grab this gspca_sonixj.ko and drop it in /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/gspca/

Ar trebui să conțină detalii clare despre ce tipuri de modemuri merg și care sunt pașii pentru a-i face să meargă dacă nu e out-of-the-box. Va fi util celor care vor să cumpere dar mai ales dezvoltatorilor, să vedem cum putem automatiza și face ca în cât mai multe distribuții care vor fi lansate în toamna acestui an să meargă mult mai bine conexiunile net prin acest tip de modemuri.

Ajutor artwork Kiwi - 3. Tema Wordpress

De ceva vreme plănuiesc să mut situl kiwilinux.org de pe HTML+CSS scrise de mână pe Wordpress. În primul rând pentru a putea modifica conținutul mai ușor și fără nevoia de acces ssh la server, dar și pentru o mai bună organizare. Stas mi-a zis despre qtranslate, plugin pentru situri WP cu conținut în mai multe limbi pe care l-aș folosi.
Dar nu sunt în stare să modific o temă WP să arate tolerabil. Cei care se îndoiesc să se uite aici :)

Probabil sunt generatoare de *teme simple* WP. Tot ce vreau e banner de mărime dată (să iasă căt de apropiat de ce e acum pe kiwilinux.org) și un navbar pe sub, dar în temele existente dacă poza nu e fix cât e acolo trebuie umblat la CSS.
Mai mult, aș vrea o temă cu cât mai puțin acces la PHP în ea, să fie cât mai lightweight. Există așa ceva?

It is slightly over two years old but had more frequent releases, that's how they got to be as many as Ubuntu's :) Thanks to the Romanian LoCo team members and Ubuntu users who have helped with artwork and testing.

Versiunea 9.04 (a zecea deja!) e aproape oficial lansată. Mulțumesc lui Radu Ilea pentru portatul usplash artwork la 9.04, lui Gergey Imre și Stas Sushkov pentru ajutor cu hostat torrent și imagini ISO, lui Ciprian Ghenciu tot pentru hostat și care a făcut o copertă de CD și va trimite 50 de CDuri pentru distribuit la Eliberatica și nu numai, lui Lázár Árpád care a făcut și el o variantă de copertă CD și a ajutat la testat ISO și wubi, lui Alin Rus și lui blackdown de pe forumul Ubuntu România care au testat wubi.

Pentru 9.10 planurile sunt: mutate cât mai multe pachete posibil din PPA în Ubuntu Universe și făcut ceva upstream/original care va fi diferit sau în plus față de Ubuntu.

Stare artwork Kiwi

Deşi am câteva ipoteze, nu mi-e 100% clar de ce dă mai multe rezultate postarea pe blog decât pe listele specializate (kiwi si ubuntu). Oricum accept asta şi continui să scriu despre taskurile artwork pentru Kiwi aici în loc de listele de discuţii :) Voi face şi pe site o pagină dedicată.

Radu Ilea a adaptat usplash artwork pentru 9.04. Nu era vorba doar de efectul estetic până la urmă, în noul usplash în 9.04 s-au făcut schimbări ce necesită adaptarea imaginilor şi ca format nu doar ca aspect. Şi .so-ul rezultat e 500k în loc de 2.5M deci ajută şi la conservarea spaţiului pe CD în trei locuri unde este prezent. Pachetul tocmai s-a builduit în Launchpad PPA, va fi pus şi în arhiva kiwilinux.org în seara asta.

Ce mai e de făcut : alt fundal pentru ecranul de autentificare GDM. E ok cel verde de acum, făcut de unul din contributorii art Xubuntu, dar parcă se poate mai bine, mai ales potrivirea cu logo si text Kiwi ce se suprapun.

Ar mai fi bannere şi butonaşe de inclus în HTML-uri, odată ce vedem care sunt dimensiunile cele mai populare, şi o copertă de CD.

Ca răspuns la postarea anterioară Manuel Ciosici a convertit fișierul cu logouri din format Fireworks în .psd, cel al lui Photoshop, și care și Gimp îl poate deschide. Cred că se pot face deja bannere mai ok decât cele de acum.
Deci un pas bun, chiar dacă nu cel final (SVG 100%) :)

Mai e un task pentru cineva care se pricepe la Gimp, și anume adus la zi bootsplashul Kiwi cu shcimbările din Ubuntu 9.04. Și cel folosit acum e bun, dar în 9.04 au făcut bara de progres mult mai slick și în general imaginile au fost refăcute.

Cel mai bine e de folosit un sistem 9.04 sudo apt-get build-dep usplash-theme-ubuntu și apt-get source usplash-theme-ubuntu , apoi în directorul nou creat făcute modificări la PNG-uri să fie cu Kiwi apoi debuild -us -uc , instalat deburile rezultate și apoi reboot pentru a vedea dacă noul usplash e ok :) Dacă e ok atunci e bun de inclus în arhivă, pentru lansarea Kiwi 9.04. Fontul folosit până acum e ttf-ubuntu-title.

Dacă asta pare prea complicat sau nu e un Ubuntu 9.04 la îndemână am pus aici toate fișierele din care se compilează un usplash final pentru diverse rezoluții. Se poate face echivalentul Kiwi și fără testat atăta vreme cât se păstrează caracteristicile PNG-urilor, adică rezoluție, culoare de fond/transparență, tip de encodare și poziție logo text în pagină.

Logoul original pentru Kiwi a fost făcut în Adobe Fireworks, persoana care a desenat nefiind destul de familiarizată pe atunci cu Inkscape sau Gimp. Îmi place cum a ieşit, dar pentru a permite modificări şi adaptări uşoare de cât mai multă lume, imaginile trebuie convertite sau refăcute într-un format deschis, de exemplu SVG, sau măcar unul cross-platform (Gimp ştie să citească fişiere Photoshop dar nu şi pe cele Fireworks). Mi se mai cere din când în când câte un banner şi nu am de unde da. Aş prefera să pun link la câteva fişiere în format mai răspândit decât cel al Fireworks în aceste cazuri.

Fireworks foloseşte ca format nativ PNG cu extensii proprietare care îi permit să stocheze informaţii despre layere în acelaşi fişier, dar acestea nu se pot vedea cu alte aplicaţii.

Dacă ştii să exporţi din Fireworks în PSD (nu ştiu sigur dacă ştie) sau poţi redesena în Inkscape/GIMP şi să arate foarte asemănător cu logo şi banner de acum, ar fi de ajutor dacă ai încerca :)

Strălucirea şi efectul putin 3D de pe logo e foarte important să râmână. Reproducerile în format liber vizibile acum în galeria de mediatizare aici sunt mai 2D.

Experienţe cu instituţiile publice

Introducere

Grupul pentru Software Liber are o iniţiativă de a depune cereri în baza legii transparenţei (544/2001) la instituţiile publice pentru a afla cu aproximaţie câte licenţe Windows şi Office sunt folosite în acestea şi pentru a putea estima costurile.

Legea prevede că răspunsul la cerere se dă în maxim 10 zile, iar dacă nu se poate aşa repede atunci te anunţă tot în acest interval că va dura maxim 30 zile.

Experienţa mea de până acum cu patru instituţii din Cluj.

La Primăria Cluj a fost cel mai standard şi fără surprize, instituţie cum ne-am obişnuit. O coadă mică, luată cererea fără întrebări, primit numărul pe un bon, informat că va veni răspunsul in 30 zile, răspuns care nu a venit încă în 35 de zile, nici notificare că va dura mai mult. Business as usual.

La Consiliul Judeţean personal foarte relaxat si amabil, au ajutat cu completarea, m-au invitat înapoi în caz că am alte treburi, au răspuns fix în 10 zile. Răspunsul e foarte scurt însă şi nu detaliat cum am cerut, deci probabil voi da curs invitaţiei lor de a reveni.

La Inspectoratul Şcolar Judeţean, încă nu au trecut cele 30 de zile, dar cele 10 în care trebuiau să anunţe că mai e de lucru da, nu am primit încă răspuns.

La Prefectură, verifică buletinul la intrare că e regulament mai strict, depunerea a fost ok, au trimis răspuns în ceva mai mult de 10 zile, din păcate negativ şi foarte scurt zicând că e secret de stat.
Pentru a clarifica situaţia am trimis o nouă cerere specificând că mă interesează doar licenţele Windows şi Office, ca să zici că numărul acestora e secret de stat ar trebui însă să ai mult tupeu :)
Chiar nu ne interesează dacă au softuri speciale pentru uz intern.

Sfaturi pentru alţii care vor să depună

Ca în software se pare că e mai bine să începem cu paşi mici la început, faza de prototipizare, beta, cunoaşterea domeniului, etc. Deci cereri scurte şi foarte la obiect, să nu sperie prin volumul de muncă implicat. La Primărie am cerut tot ce mi-a trecut prin cap şi se pare că au intrat în buclă infinită din această cauză. Recomand cererea a doua pentru Prefectură ca model,
doar Windows si Office, nr licenţe si costuri.

Dacă vă e lene să mergeţi până acolo daţi un telefon sau email la instituţie şi vedeţi dacă acceptă cereri în baza acestei legi prin email. Deşi e mai sigur în personă mai ales că nu e clar câţi şi cât de repede răspund la mailuri.

Cereţi ca răspunsul să fie trimis prin email. Nu are sens să stricăm prea multă hârtie pe asta, şi şi lor le e mai uşor să nu trimită prin poştă. E la fel de oficial şi să ceri şi să primeşti răspuns prin email din câte am fost informat.

Cereţi neapărat numărul de înregistrare al cererii, să fie clar că a intrat 'în sistem'

În viitor mă gândesc dacă să menţionăm un link despre iniţiativă pe situl grupului, pentru a părea mai oficiali şi mai de luat în serios. Poate ajuta la viteză şi faptul că se ştie că lumea aşteaptă şi se uită pe un site, pe de altă parte mi se pare că răspunsurile ar trebui date la fel oricui cere şi nu aş vrea să încurajăm diferenţierea bazat pe cât de publică sau nu e o iniţiativă.

Prezentare la liceu

Vinerea trecută am ținut o prezentare despre FOSS și Kiwi la liceul Petru Maior din Gherla, o consecință a prezentării de acum căteva săptămâni în fața mai multor profesoare și profesori de info din județ adunați la curs de metodică organizat de inspectorat. Dan Telecan elev în clasa a 11-a s-a ocupat de organizare inclusiv făcutul și pusul afișelor la școală.
Au participat câțiva profesori inclusiv de la un alt liceu, câteva persoane care nu au legătură cu școala dar erau utilizatori Ubuntu sau Kiwi, și în jur de 15 elevi din care cel puțin 6 păreau interesați. Erau curioși cum se poate programa în Linux, mai ales în Pascal și C#, iar elevii își răspundeau și între ei.

Au aflat sper toți că există forumul Ubuntu-ro și secțiunea programare, care e diferența între freeware și free software și au văzut cât de repede și ușor se instalează Kiwi și efectele Compiz. Dan asista cu instalarea Kiwi și cu rotitul cubului dar și cu răspunsuri în timp ce eu vorbeam.
Toți păreau deschiși la Linux inclusiv profesorii și m-am mirat ca au fost atâția care îl foloseau deja. Era un grup mic de elevi pe Debian interesați de securitate (culoarea pălăriei nespecificată) care întrețin un site mic legat de Linux.

Personal mi s-a părut un eveniment reușit și mă bucur că este interes pentru asta în rândul elevilor.

* Jani Monoses a ţinut o prezentare scurtă unui grup de 25-30 profesori de info din judeţul Cluj.
Foarte puţini au experienţă cu Linux şi soft liber şi în afara faptului că sunt gratuite, nu cunosc avantajele acestora. Din cauză că învătământul preuniversitar e foarte centralizat, profesorii nu au prea multe de spus în legătură cu programa şcolară, care printre altele prevede predarea Microsoft Office. Majoritatea consideră că elevii nu sunt interesaţi deci nu contează aşa mult ce li se predă. Aici va avea Asociaţia GSL destul de lucru :)

Localizare:

Echipa de localizare GNOME, prin contribuţiile lui Adi Roiban, Mişu Moldovan, Lucian Grijincu, Alexandru Szasz şi indirect prin echipa din Launchpad, a făcut progres semnificativ în ultima perioadă cu peste 5000 de stringuri noi traduse. E completat 83% din GNOME, iar româna e printre limbile oficial suportate pentru versiunea 2.26.
Mai este de lucru, iar progresul echipei puteți urmări aici și pe lista de discuții.

Treburi interne:

A avut loc prima întâlnire a grupului pe IRC. Ideea e să le ţinem regulat şi deciziile majore să se ia doar la aceste întâlniri.

Making Launchpad more popular?

Disclaimer: this is not an invitation to discussions on the merits of various tools, just something I have been thinking about a lot lately.

In the past few months it has often occurred to me that Launchpad would be waaaay more popular if it supported git. I have been using git since last summer. I picked it for the projects I work on for the same reason I abandoned darcs for bzr a few years ago: more and more projects I was interested in were starting use it, and switching between too many different tools doing the exact same job is not worth it. I was prepared to yet climb another learning curve for longer term gain.

I specifically avoid feature comparisons of bzr and git because that is not the point - regardless of the causes, git is being adopted at a much faster rate.

I am pretty sure that unless it will be in LP 3.0, git support will be among the first features to be implemented in the open source LP. And unless the bzr team has something huge up their sleeves I cannot see LP compete with proprietary services like github for hosting the various open source projects that are not directly related to Ubuntu.

Primul set bilunar de știri FOSS-RO

În urma sugestiilor cititorilor și a crizei economico-financiare aceste știri vor fi bilunare de acum înainte.

Alexandru Szasz a scos o nouă versiune a aplicației pentru traduceri online, Narro, cea folosită printe altele la traducerea Mozilla și Open Office în română. Anunțul în engleză îl puteți citi aici.

Stas Sushkov a anunțat și dat drumul la noul site al grupului la care a lucrat cu Igor Știrbu și posibil cu alte persoane.

Sub îndrumarea lui Adi Roiban, membri echipei Ubuntu România au completat recent traducerile în română ale documentației oficiale pentru versiunea 8.04, cea pentru versiunea 8.10 precum și cursul de utilizare desktop pentru 8.04.

Retrospective personale ale anului 2008 cu accent pe activități FOSS au scris Jani și Adi, despre OpenOffice Alexandru Szasz iar despre Mozilla Alina Mierluș.

Un sumar al activităților mele legate de voluntariat FOSS din anul 2008.

* Kiwi Linux: am lansat 3 versiuni (8.04, 8.08 si 8.12), cu numărul de utilizatori crescând ușor după fiecare.

* Evenimente pentru public: co-organizat primul Document Freedom Day local cu Adi Roiban în martie. Un eșec semnificativ e că am promis că voi organiza Software Freedom Day dar am tot amânat din lipsa de timp pâna nu am mai ținut.

* Întâlniri cu comunitatea: release party Ubuntu în mai, prezentarea Fedora/OO/Mozilla de la Babeș-Bolyai din iunie unde am făcut cunoștință cu Alexandru Szasz și Nicu Buculei, FOSSCamp la Păltiniș unde i-am cunoscut pe cei din LUG-ul din Arad în august

* Prezentări Kiwi și/sau OLPC: ITFest la Timișoara în martie, Eliberatica în mai la București, lansare Ubuntu 8.10 la Tg Mureș în noiembrie.

* Lobby: după participarea online în lungile discuții pe tic-lobby am fost la București reprezentând Startx în subcomitetul ASRO care vota asupra promovării formatului OOXML creat de Microsoft în regim de urgență ca standard internațional ISO. L-am cunoscut pe Răzvan Sandu, cu care am fost printre puținii (și în afară de reprezentantul IBM singurii care am expus punctul de vedere clar anti-acceptat de urgență al OOXML) care au votat nu.

* Primit drept de commit in GNOME svn în noiembrie. Un singur commit deocamdată :)

* Mass-media: s-a scris de Doc Freedom Day în presa locală și ne-au arătat la ProTV Cluj. În decembrie am fost subiectul a două interviuri scurte cu tema Kiwi, Linux si FOSS local sau în general, unul pentru Informația Cluj, celălalt pentru Jurnalul Național.

Știri săptămânale din lumea FOSS-RO, ediția a treia

În această săptămână un set de știri legate de Kiwi Linux și o trimitere la un bilanț anual al lui Alexandru Szasz.

* Numărul de IPuri diferite care accesează arhivele de pachete de pe kiwilinux.org a trecut cu puțin peste 8500 pe luna decembrie. Nu e o creștere prea mare ( ~ 7500 pe noiembrie) cu toate că a fost un release nou. Ultimul Pidgin, 2.5.3 a fost pus în arhivele Kiwi Linux 8.12 .

* Alin Rus a anunțat o modificare făcută de el în unealta unetbootin pentru a putea creea stickuri USB Live din imaginea Kiwi.

Alexandru Szasz a sumarizat pe blogul său activitățile sale mai importante legate de FOSS (Mozilla, OO, traduceri, comunitate) din 2008. A uitat să menționeze întâlnirea de la Cluj din iunie dar la cât de activ a fost nu e de mirare :) Mi se pare o idee bună că se pot afla informații sau detalii noi. Pidgin 2.5.3 packages for 8.10

There are now Pidgin 2.5.3 packages available in the Intrepid series of the Kiwi Linux PPA . You can pick the packages manually, aware that Pidgin is split in quite a few debs, or enable the archive. Only do the latter if you are also fine with upgrading to Open Office 3.0 since that is in there too.

The PPA is still unsigned. If you want the signed mirror at kiwilinux.org install this deb which will take care of adding the Kiwi and Medibuntu repos with their GPG keys into APT.

Kiwi Linux 8.12 released

The first Kiwi Linux edition based on Ubuntu 8.10 is ready. The most significant changes from Ubuntu and earlier Kiwi Linux releases is the inclusion of OpenOffice 3 with up-to-date Romanian translations done using Narro and the Wubi installer on the CD. Apart from this, as usual, it has restricted media support and the Medibuntu repos enabled, firmware for the annoying Speedtouch 330 ADSL modem, a graphical tool for restoring a lost GRUB menu, the extended Compiz settings UI, and some more bits and pieces.

Dear Lazyweb: Multilingual Wordpress static site?

I know that Lazyweb won't be reading this because just like Santa it is simulated by people, but I don't mind much as long as I get an answer.

Do you have experience in building a mostly static - that is not a blog - WordPress site in at least two languages? I'd like to get rid of the three-lingual static HTML on the Kiwi Linux site and use WP but I am not sure which of the many multilingual plugins for it is the most mature and easiest to install and maintain. The site should have a similar URL structure and layout with only the language code difference in the URL, and all content is written manually, so it is not the automatic translation plugins that I am after.

Any examples of existing multilingual WP sites which are not a hassle to maintain are fine too.

I'd like it to be structured more or less like the current site, but easier to modify.

Paying for free stuff

For software

Having used Vim for over 8 years, and it being the only application that I stuck to while changing distributions, window managers, desktop environments, browsers, mail clients and other bits, it was high time I 'bought a license' for it. The money actually goes to a children center in Uganda.
Assignment: come up with a parallel involving emacs and money going into Nigeria.Then look up both countries on the map if you do not already know where they are.

I have never directly payed for software before: when using Windows many years ago, it was (and to a large extent it still is today) normal for home users in Romania to just pirate it along with any other app they needed. I guess I have at least partially payed that back when purchasing a laptop with Windows ME preinstalled and purging it within a day and by having a percentage of my taxes continually being spent by our institutions on buying their software.

For content

Wikipedia is the only site I'd really miss if the Internet went the way of the parrot, so I felt that in this case too a donation could only begin to express my appreciation for the wasted tim^W^W value I got out of it during the years.

I have previously bought PDF or paper books after reading free online versions of them (sometimes earlier editions only), but that is different, you actually buy something new in that case.

Kiwi Linux 8.12 plans

Until now, since 7.04, a new Kiwi Linux was released within days of a major Ubuntu launch, slightly deriving the original image for an even easier experience for newbies, Windows refugees and Romanian and Hungarian speakers.

With 8.10 however I broke this habit for a few reasons. I had much less free time at the end of October, Ubuntu came out very late in the month leaving very few days for testing, releasing and still being able to call it 8.10 without cheating, and not least, the Ibex seemed to have quite a few hardware support regressions on the computers I use.

So the next release will be 8.12, due in the first half of December.
It will include among others 8.10 updates, wubi that actually installs Kiwi and not Ubuntu, and OpenOffice 3.0.

The archives already have OO 3 (copied from scribblers PPA and with updated Romanian translations) and as another novelty the Jaunty archive is enabled long before release, so it does not break Kiwi users' setups who will wish to test the Ubuntu development branch.

The 'Highest DVCS barrier to entry' award goes to Pidgin

While Pidgin differs from most other projects in its pick of revision control tool (Monotone, and probably a good choice at the time they switched last year IIRC) it's not this choice in itself that makes it the hardest project to start 'following' from what I've seen so far.

Regardless of the tool and project, most initial checkouts look something like this

$VCS $GETCMD [$OPTIONS] $URL

and you get a directory with the source code ready to study and build.

Not for Pidgin.

There's a page that describes the method, including the script you run, and a link to the 210Mb tarball of the repo you download first in order to not tax the servers with getting all the history via Monotone itself.

Fortunately there's a mirror of this on github. Unfortunately it's not regularly updated.

I know the Pidgin developers are busy and probably grown used to Monotone but I still hope they will just switch to git sooner rather than later.

I suspect Open Office is even more annoying to get started on, but OO is a different category of project anyway.

Democracy is buggy too, you know

Stephen, while Connecticut failed at the specific aspect of democracy you mention, it sure beat California at common sense, decency and tolerance. You have just cheered for an unfortunate manifestation of a weakness of democracy, namely the tyranny of the majority.

By this logic, if 80% of the electorate voted for kicking the other 20% in the nuts we should be happy that democratic values are upheld. So I am inclined to believe that your and others' problem is not that the Connecticut decision was made by 8 judges, but rather the decision itself.

I have read plenty of argumented pro gay-marriage posts in the blogospehere, but nothing similar from the opposing side. Stephen or anyone care to write one up and explain what are the benefits in this case of making other people feel miserable :) ? I am truly interested in plausible arguments convincingly written up in one's own words and not just in links to websites.

Şabloane Open Office pentru România?

Ar fi foarte convenabil să existe câteva şabloane de documente pentru OpenOffice Writer, specifice pentru România. Tipare pentru cereri, chitanţe, facturi, documente standard ce se trimit prin şcoli şi ministere. Un astfel de set de documente puse în domeniul public, afişate pe situl ro.openoffice.org şi împachetate pentru distribuţii Linux ar reprezenta un argument în plus pentru OO, să nu trebuiască scrise de la zero în cazul utilizatorilor noi.

Deci cei care au aşa ceva sunt rugaţi frumos să le pună undeva online şi să lase un comentariu, să vedem cum le putem aduna şi organiza. Nu trebuie să fii programator să ajuţi la îmbunătăţirea şi răspândirea softului liber :)

Dishonest ethernet switch marketing from ASUS

While it could be an innocent oversight, branding 10/100Mbps ethernet switches as GigaX is most likely intentionally misleading. Some of the ASUS GigaX family switches are indeed supporting 1000Mbps Gigabit ethernet, but many aren't.

Making a Vimicro/ZStar/A4Tech webcam work again

My webcam which used to work in Hardy no longer works with the new kernel in Intrepid and I realized this too late to report it during the devel cycle. The chip is shown by lsusb as

0ac8:303b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0303 WebCam

and was probably working in Hardy because of the different drivers used in that kernel. The latest upstream includes the gspca driver family which has not been confirmed to work on all possible models it probably supports.

I reported it in LP and kernel bugzilla.

A month of Inbox Zero and GTD

I have been trying out the 'inbox zero' approach in my gmail account for the past month and I am happy with it. I had archived about 9200 mails from my inbox when I started and have kept it clean ever since. Whereas before I used to keep track of important mails by starring them I now use the GTDInbox Firefox extension that extends GMail's interface and allows one to attach multiple labels to mails in accordance with Getting Things Done terminology.

On arrival a mail is read, labeled if important and then immediately archived. For TODO items that are not originating in mail exchanges with someone else I send a personal message, which is one of the features added by GTDInbox.

I have also started using k,j,r,],x,y and other GMail keyboard shortcuts which help avoiding the mouse most of the time.

It's nice to know that projects, next actions and references are somewhere where I cannot easily see them, as opposed to having them staring at me from the inbox page and making me feel guilty :)

I wish there was a similarly useful Firefox extension for Getting Things Undone.

Cu ocazia ceremoniei de deschidere pentru bobocii de la calculatoare, am fost azi la Politehnică cu Stas și am împărțit în jur de 50 de flyere color (nu erau pliabile deci nu pot să le zic pliante) cu noul logo al grupului și cu o scurtă introducere. Felicitări lui Stas că s-a mobilizat și le-a făcut chiar la timp, e un început muuuult mai dinamic pt GSL decât anul trecut :)

Urmează să plănuim și să ținem Software Freedom Day cu care am rămas datori din septembrie pentru că așteptam să se adune studenții.

I have just made a new release of Kiwilinux, the 'Ro/Hu targeted but useful for international audiences, including New Zealand' derivative of Ubuntu. It is based on 8.04.1 and updated to the most recent packages in the Ubuntu, Medibuntu and Kiwi archives. As usual, very comprehensive multimedia support, working Speedtouch 330 ADSL modem, and for Romanian users for the first time a distro with OOo and Thunderbird translations, thanks to the people working on those in Narro .

La întâlnirea de sâmbătă cu cei patru fedorişti din Bucureşti şi cu Alexandru Szasz, am aflat lucruri interesante despre comunitatea şi artworkul Fedora - caracteristicile tehnice sunt cam aceleaşi ca în Ubuntu deci le cunoşteam - şi despre proiectul Narro al lui Alexandru, aplicaţia web de tradus care e folosită în principal pentru localizarea în română a OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Gimp, Inkscape.

La întâlnire am fost toţi de acord că e o idee bună ca traducerile la aceste proiecte să se facă doar acolo în loc de a lucra şi în Launchpad, astfel ca duplicarea de eforturi să fie minimă. Sunt şanse mult mai bune să se finiseze şi valideze aceste traduceri dacă utilizatorii de la toate distribuţiile de Linux şi cei care folosesc FOSS în Windows colaborează :)

Dacă vreţi să vedeţi mai repede distribuţii de Linux incluzând traduceri pentru aceste programe care cu excepţia Firefox sunt distribuite doar în engleză în acest moment, daţi o mână de ajutor la adresa

În luna mai numărul de IP-uri unice de unde s-a accesat arhiva Kiwilinux a fost puţin peste 7000, popularitate datorată versiunii 8.04 lansate la sfârşitul lunii aprilie. Sunt curios cum va evolua numărul de utilizatori în următoarea perioadă.

Magazinul Genesys computers din Cluj au un afiş Ubuntu pe uşa de la stradă (Bd 21 Decembrie 1989) şi dau Kiwi 8.04 preinstalat pe multe din sistemele atât second cât şi noi.

Un grup de trei studente de la psihologie au făcut pentru un proiect practic la Psihologia Reclamei un miniplan de campanie (plan de mini-campanie?) de promovat Kiwi: Afiş landscape, afiş portret, filmuleţ:)

Scriu ce îmi amintesc de prezentările de vineri și sămbătă, nu sunt în ordine cronologică. Probabil am uitat detalii sau chiar de unele prezentări la care nu am fost destul de atent sau nu le-am prins complet.

Zak Greant a vorbit de licențiere FOSS, prezentare bună, dar nimic nou pentru cine era în temă, iar Brian King de la Mozilla a despre importanța open web.

Matthew "Chewy" Trewhella despre APIuri deschise de Google, maps, mashups, youtube API, Google Earth, a fost bună.

A fost o prezentare despre OpenSolaris, cu demo de sistem redundant ZFS, metoda raidz pe 3 stickuri USB.

Constantin Teodorescu, secretar de stat la Ministerul Telecomunicațiilor a vorbit de OpenID în administrația publică, cu firmele de telefonie mobilă și o bancă din țară având deja aceste servicii în beta. Adică dacă ești client la acea bancă sau una din rețelele mobile, bazat pe datele pe care le dețin despre tine ei pot certifica în tranzacții online care cer OpenID că ești cine pretinzi că ești.

Prezentarea a fost bună, cu umor (two way authentication - pasul unu zici la notar să te autentifice bazat pe buletin, el strâmbă din nas, pasul doi scoți o sticlă de alcool scump și i-o dai, se face tranzacția). A avut și o poză cu ministrul finanțelor, Varujan Vosganian, photoshopat să aibă ochi ca motanul încălțat din Shrek la vederea sumelor necesare pentru implementări in IT.

A zis că acum 5 ani când nu lucra la minister, le tot dădea la cei de sus broșuri cu avantajele FOSS și încerca să-i convingă să evalueze Linux. Aș fi preferat o prezentare despre asta în loc de OpenID, unde să explice care sunt obstacolele, acum că și el este sus și le vede mai bine.

Bogdan Manolea de la APTI a prezentat opțiunile și pașii legali necesari pentu a porni o activitate comercială ca PFA sau SRL și mentionat licențele în caz că afacerea implică FOSS.

Zoli Herczeg de la Microsoft a vorbit despre open source și Microsoft, colaborările între echipa Vista şi dezvoltatorii Firefox sau cu cei de la Samba, despre Codeplex, situl lor de colaborare și hosting pentru proiecte cu surse deschise, majoritatea sub licențe MSPL sau MSRL. A fost întrebat de afirmațiile lui Ballmer legate de patente pe care Linux le încalcă și normal nu prea avea ce să răspundă la asta. Mesajul era ca ei se schimbă încet și încearcă să coexiste cu FOSS, că sunt mai multe direcții în firmă și de aceea mesajele și pozițiile Microsoft sunt contradictorii sau inconsistente uneori.

O prezentare interesantă a fost cea a lui Louis Suarez-Potts, cordonator de proiect la Openoffice și angajat Sun. A zis că se adoptă OOo pe scară largă acolo unde sunt companii locale care oferă suport. Și în spatele migrarii a zeci de mii de stații pentru Jandarmeria franceză stă o firma locală care a oferit suport și training. Doar așa se poate la instituții de stat sau firme mari.
A zis și că Sun e cel mai mare contributor corporate la ecosistemul FOSS, folosind aceleași statistici ce le-am văzut prezentate anul trecut la FOSDEM de către Simon Phipps. Sincer mă îndoiesc că pe un desktop comun majoritatea codului e de la Sun și doar după aceea vin RedHat, IBM și alții, dar dacă se ia OOo în considerare, sigur ies destul de în față pentru că e proiectul FOSS cu cel mai mare code-base din câte știu.
Și după toată discuția despre importanța libertății și standardelor deschise a zis la sfârșit că nimic nu e altruist în open source, și dacă vrei să faci ceva cu adevărat altruist 'Go to Darfur'. Mi s-a părut ciudat, că parcă ignora faptul că mulți dezvoltă voluntar -- ceea ce e mai puțin adevărat în cazul OOo, unde majoritatea dezvoltatorilor sunt angajați Sun.
La o întrebare din public a zis și că Sun preferă să dețina copyright pe tot OOo - un punct destul de sensibil pe pentru comunitate - pentru că orice alegere de licență e o mișcare strategică. Nu e clar de ce se tem, dar clar preferă să mențină controlul, deși asta face ca OOo să nu prezinte atât interes cât ar putea pentru contributori ocazionali, pentru că e nevoie de hârțogărie pentru cedarea drepturilor de autor (Ca la FSF și contribuțiile la GCC, GDB și alte proiecte GNU)

Mi-a plăcut prezentarea lui Humberto Moran despre middleware open source pentru RFID. RFID are foarte multe avantaje dar prezintă probleme foarte serioase dacă ne găndim la securitate și privacy. Dacă ar rula FOSS pe chipuri și pe sistemele aferente ar fi mult mai liniștitoare folosirea RFID. E un proiect la o universitate din Atena care la așa ceva lucrează. Mă tem că fabricanții de RFID ar fi totuși reticenți la asta, mai ales că în multe implementări tocmai controlul e avantajul pe care vor să-l aibă cei care inițiază proiectele, multe de stat.

Shane de la Active State a prezentat produsul Komodo, IDE pentru dezvoltat aplicații web în diverse limbaje de scripting. Ei au portat inițial Perl și PHP pe Windows. Au o variantă open a acestui produs comercial, și acest fapt le aduce mai mulți utilizatori și clienți.

Un alt Shane de la Free Software Foundation Europe, foarte relaxat și cu umor sec a vorbit despre importanța libertății. Mi s-a părut cel mai coerent și profund dintre toți speakerii de la conferință, e drept că și prezentarea și intervențiile lui la ceilalți erau despre lucruri mai serioase și mai puțin mainstream.

La polul opus s-a aflat Varujan Pambuccian, șeful comisiei de IT în parlament. A fost invitat surpriză, a vorbit între două prezentări dimineața, și a intervenit după prezentarea lui Zak.
Are carismă și vorbea bine, dar din ce a spus nu sunt de acord cu nimic - și m-am liniștit discutând cu alții în pauze, pentru că majoritatea au fost de aceeași părere. A afirmat că meciul dintre FOSS și soft comercial e gata, și că viitorul e pe servicii și Web OS, și că oricine poate da gratis softul fie că e liber, fie că e comercial. Nu a menționat deloc libertatea și sursele, doar prețul deci clar că pierde din vedere un aspect esențial. Apoi a vorbit de patente și ce prostie e că Europa se opune și nu urmează exemplul patentelor soft din SUA. Și că el ca matematician ca formație, ar prefera ca ideile să fie patentabile să nu se îmbogățească firme mari pe munca matematicienilor și ei să-și poate vinde ideile mai bine, pentru că sunt plătiți mizerabil. Nu mă îndoiesc că sunt plătiți prost, dar matematicienii de obicei nu prin salariile lor mari se fac cunoscuți. A avut și atitudine destul de nepotrivită, luându-i pe cei care susțineau că patentele pe software nu-s o idee bună cu 'stai sa-ți explic unde gresești'. A zis și că e o prostie să impui ceva - cum ar fi open source - în guvernare și administrație, pentru că astfel iei libertatea de a alege softul comercial și e ipocrizie. Deci nu trebuie reglementare și trebuie să fim neutri și interoperabili. Asta de la persoana care anul trecut a zis ca laptopul OLPC e o jucărie și a promovat Intel Classmate cu XP pe el ca alternativă pentru că e un sistem 'adevărat', și care e susținător Microsoft și .NET public de ceva vreme bună. Nu e de mirare că cei din comisia de IT din parlament zic lucruri trăznite cu așa șef.

Dragoș Mănac de la SNS, unul din partenerii RedHat din țară, a prezentat modelul de business RedHat cu parteneri, suport și service pe RHEL.

Martin Michlmayr de la HP, fost Debian Project Leader despre fossology.org si fossbazaar.org dezvoltate la HP. Sunt mari parteneri MS dec intern folosesc mult mai mult soft comercial decât FOSS

Prezentarea Kiwi era programată ultima vineri, la 5:30, dar cum s-a decalat programul cu câte 5-10 minute per prezentare am ajuns să începem la 6:30 și în loc de 50 minute pentru combinația slideuri+demo am făcut doar slidurile și Tiberiu Turbureanu nu a mai apucat să facă demo. Noroc că aproape fără excepție cei din sală foloseau Linux deja, deci nu avea sens prea mult să arătăm ce echivalente au aplicațiile Windows. Era poate jumate din audiența de la prezentările de dimineața că au obosit oamenii, dar și așa a fost cel mai mare număr la care am prezentat până acum, poate chiar 100.

A mers bine, cred că le-a plăcut.

David Ascher de la Mozilla a vorbit de planuri pentru Thunderbird.
Mozilla Foundation deține 100% din Mozilla Corporation, cei care dezvoltă Firefox, deci combină avantajele unei companii comerciale cu cele ale unui non-profit din câte am înțeles. Există și libertate de mișcare și buget, dar și transparență pentru cei dinafară și nu poate cumpăra nimeni MoCo de la ei.

David e șeful la MoMo - compania recent formată deținută tot de MoFo pentru a dezvolta Thunderbird. Vor să îmbunătățească experiența de email și SMS și restul de comunicare prin idei noi. Nu e prioritară sincronizarea cu diverse mobile și PDAuri, cel puțin nu pentru TB 3.0, și nici pe interop Exchange nu vor să cheltuie resurse, deci nu va fi competiție directă la outlook și evolution. Nu le e clar încă de unde vor scoate bani din TB dar se gândesc.

Alexander Farstadt de la EZ-Systems, a prezentat produsul lor EZ pentru 'enterprise publishing' . Nu am fost atent dar am vorbit cu el mai tărziu, e din Norvegia, au vre-o 70 de oameni în toată lumea și fac situri cu trafic foarte mare. A zis ca e similar cu Joomla și Drupal dar gândit de la început pentru nișa enterprise adică cu multe date și mulți utilizatori. Început in 99, scris în PHP și Java și le merge bine afacerea. E complet open source, nu le e frică de competiție sau de forkuri, și se câștigă din customizări și alte servicii. El e CEO si proprietar, a făcut matematică și finanțe deci nu e programator.

Barbara Held de la diverse comisii Europene ce coordonează IT, despre importanța standardelor deschise și a FOSS. Erau date și acronime la comisiile din care face parte și a zis că pe viitor vor fi fonduri pentru FOSS în administrația publică. Vom vedea.

IBM a avut două prezentări, despre cum s-au întors cu 180 grade de la cea mai închisă companie în anii '70-'80 la mari suporteri FOSS, că s-a schimbat lumea. Au zis de multe din proiectele la care lucrează și de Eclipse, și alte lucruri de care știam deja, deci am uitat care erau.

Au participat 4-5 de la Mozilla sau care lucrează cu produse bazate pe Mozilla și erau printre cei mai pro la întrebări și răspunsuri.

Au fost și câteva prezentări de servicii sau produse de la sponsori, dar cum nu aveau legătură multă cu FOSS nu le mai menționez.

Mesele și freedom party de după cele două zile au fost faine, ocazie bună de strigat la vecinii de masă și alți participanți (era muzică live tare) și făcut cunoștințe.

Am mai vorbit în privat cu Alexandru Muscalu de la Microsoft, care a zis că ei se schimbă încet spre a fi mai deschiși, și că ar fi bine să putem coexista fără să ne luăm unii de alții prea mult, că intențiile de multe ori coincid. Da, trebui să vedem cum facem ca să rămânem civilizați și să fie OK pentru educația și IT locale, dar e destul de greu că sunt diferențe puține dar destul de mari despre cum credem că se face asta mai bine.

O'Reilly a avut un stand de cărți, dar la sfârșit nu s-au vândut toate așa că le-au donat la 5 centre universitare, am ales fiecare pentru de unde venea, București, Iași, Brașov, Timișoara și Cluj. Pentru noi am ales împreună cu Traian Lupan, asistent la Poli la materia MO, pe care l-am cunoscut acolo. Unele vor merge la biblioteca facultății, asta era condiția O'Reilly, dar sigur vor fi și la GSL câteva. Linux Systems Programming de Robert Love, vre-o 3 de Rails, de X, Bash, CSS și altele, o cutie întreagă, vedem când vin de la Brașov via un coleg de-al lui Traian, altfel aveam de cărat în tren 20 de kg.

Mi-a plăcut să cunosc colegii de facultate ai lui Tibi care au fost la conferința. Sunt în anii 1, 2 sau 3 la Politehnică și foarte entuziaști.
Spre deosebire de cum îmi amintesc eu facultatea, au teme serioase permanent și timp puțin, dar și știu mult mai multe decât mă așteptam de la studenți în primii ani.
Au cursuri faine chiar în anul I, cu studiat inclusiv codul din kernel, cu laboratoare unde se face Linux, vim, C, bash, algoritmi. Ar fi bine să se preia și în alte facultăți acele materii și stil de predat. Am fost plăcut surprins.

E priză pe InterCity deci am putut scrie pe laptop fără să se alarmeze gnome-power-manager. Dar WiFi nu era :)

There's a CS/informatics competition for high school students being held this weekend in Cluj and it is combined with educational software presentations from software companies for informatics professors.

I asked the organizers if our Free Software Group could hold a short session about the benefits of FOSS in education, with references to Ubuntu, Edubuntu and Kiwilinux and we were given a slot after the ones which had already been planned a while ago - those of Microsoft, Cisco and a local company that sells education software for Romanian schools.

That was two days ago but yesterday we were notified that the Microsoft representative in charge with the education strategy had requested the organizers to pull the Ubuntu presentation because it is 'unfair competition' to hold such a presentation at an event sponsored by them. They are indeed co-sponsors but the conference is organized by the Ministry of Education and its local office, and is being held on the premises of a public University.

It is sad to know they are resorting to this sort of coercing and that they have such influence over the educators but looking on the bright side of it, and that's how I perceived it after thinking a bit about it, THEY ARE SCARED :)

We were also promised to be given the opportunity to present at a later date to a similar group of professors in June.

Kiwilinux 8.04 released

First of all hello Planet GNOME readers, since I forgot to say this in the previous two posts, and thanks to Jeff for adding me. While I am still an Xfce user, I tend to contribute more to GNOME lately as the clear roadmap, strict release schedule and the active community make it the more appealing project.

Kiwilinux 8.04, the Ubuntu derivative mostly for Romanian and Hungarian users is released. It is package archive and schedule compatible with Ubuntu and the changes to it are minimal but important for first time Linux users. Switching back and forth between Ubuntu and Kiwi is very easy.

Here's the FAQ for those wondering why the world needs another distro and what's with the name, and here's the downloads page.

The question of which video player and codec stack to choose was settled, it is totem-gstreamer with the restricted codecs on the CD, with a workaround in totem to play the BBC News WMV streams. The package, along with the other changes to Ubuntu are in the Kiwilinux team's PPA in Launchpad. A signed mirror of that along with the Medibuntu repositories are the additions to the default Ubuntu archives.

For those not familiar with it, Sugar is the novel graphical shell and collaborative learning environment developed for the One Laptop Per Child projects' XO laptop, but which can be run on any Linux box.

which is the most complete multimedia stack?

For the Kiwilinux derivative of Ubuntu one of the main goals has always been including reasonably complete support for multimedia content on the CD so the user does not need to search and install the bits needed for restricted formats.

By default Ubuntu uses Totem with the Gstreamer backend for both file based and streaming media.
The easy codec installation feature has made support for most restricted formats fairly straightforward although still incomplete in my experience.

So far our choice in Kiwi has been mozilla-mplayer for streaming and totem-xine as the standalone player. Libxine's maturity, better support of DVD subtitles and menus and more compact packaging - one package vs. 5-6 Gstreamer ones - made it a better pick.

For the 8.04 release I have briefly revisited the issue and I still cannot find a way of supporting the most common formats with only a single multimedia stack. The problems I have found so far include:

* VLC - although reportedly supports all conceivable formats the browser plugin is broken in Ubuntu 8.04
Bugs in Launchpad and upstream

* Totem-gstreamer - DVD menu support lacking (not a big issue but still) and apparently no consistent way of getting ASF streams to work (BBC News short videos for instance).

* Totem-xine - conflicts with PulseAudio, reported on the forums and LP and in my experience too; after a short while of playing audio goes mute and the app claims that the audio device is being used by another app.

* MPlayer - it seems to be closest to the goal but it does not have a decent and simple GUI like Totem (gnome-mplayer is promising but buggy)

I'd be happy to be proven wrong and given either the simple workaround for Xine and PulseAudio, a list of gst plugins that correctly play streaming media in the browser or an easy fix for VLC.
Until then like most other people I know I'll have all of these libs and players installed and use the most appropriate for each scenario :)

And Kiwi 8.04 is likely to include both Totem and MPlayer for the same reason just like the previous releases have.

Romania maintains OOXML approval

This past Tuesday the Romanian committee debated and voted over the OOXML issue, and the result remained 'Yes' as in September. Back then there were 12 committee members and the Yes/No/Abstain breakdown was 10:1:1 . This week 26 members voted, 13 of them joined the committee in the past two weeks, and even if almost all of the new members prominently feature the MS Partner logo on their websites the result was a much more balanced 15:6:5 . The debate was a relatively moderate argument between MS, a MS partner and three of us opposed to the fast track process. Many of the other members were probably waiting for it all to end, so we could vote and go home :) Can't blame them, it's not like they were interested or knowledgeable about the topic.

The ASRO rules state that only if consensus is reached should a final decision be made, but there's no clear rule to determine what to vote in such cases. An Abstain would have been much more logical, but it's up to them to decide.

While I agree with the 'let's make free software better' part of Miguel's blog post I think he downplays the role of activism and non-development side of FOSS. It's not OOXML per se that people are pissed off by, but the nontransparent, often corrupt and hurried process by which it is being pushed along and which in turn will affect FOSS - bug count, codebase size, compatibility issues and user confusion to name a few.

As a somewhat stretched analogy: Miguel, how about instead of you criticizing the Bush administration and their cohorts, and praising Kucinich, Gravel, Paul or Obama you just accept whatever the mainstream media produces without a word, and run for Congress yourself? 'start walking' as you say in your post :) (nb: from what I read on Miguel's blog I agree with his political views)

There needs to be awareness among non-technical users of the implications of software and data freedom or else we're simply left with 'open source'.

Document Freedom Day

Today, four days earlier than the rest of the world, we have held a small event attended by about 20 people including a local TV crew to celebrate the first Document Freedom Day. Adi and I gave two short presentations on open standards and their benefits, document formats, ODF , OOXML and the latter's ongoing and embarrassing standardization process. Even if OOXML is labeled 'Open Standard' soon by ISO, we're determined to continue the campaign of raising awareness and trying to educate the Romanian public about the merits of opennes and true interoperability.

A brief intro for those unfamiliar with the subject:

Microsoft is pushing to get their new office document format, "Office Open XML" better known as OOXML, through the ISO fast track process in order to get it approved as an open standard.
This is increasingly a requirement from national governments that realized that data should be open and vendor independent. However there is a lot of criticism concerning both the OOXML specification and the process by which it is being promoted.

In September 2007, albeit by a small margin, OOXML failed to receive the percentage of votes required to approve it as a standard. The process was extended until March 2008 during which period comments of the national committees were analyzed and responded to by ECMA (where OOXML was already accepted), a meeting was held in Geneva at the end of February to modify the original spec based on some of these comments and national committees given a chance to change their votes from September in either direction during March.

In Romania the spec got a "Yes, without comments" in September, as explained later by some committee members due to confusion about the voting options and lack of much interest, since the committee's main area of focus is keyboard maps, character encodings and language support . So there was no foul play involved as it was in some other countries.

After the vote, during the past 6 months there has been a heated debate on a local mailing list about the topic, with the majority of those who expressed their opinion being against the acceptance of OOXML as a fast track standard. The major concerns raised were those written up on noooxml.org and odfalliance.org, in short technical ambiguities caused by the burden of introducing support for legacy MSOffice format quirks, insufficiently clear assurance from a legal pov, faulty process and lack of time to carefully review and improve on the ~7000 page long spec which is not even implemented in MS Office (what they propose for standardization now has quite a few changes since the previous version and the ones deployed in MSOffice 2007 installs)

Besides those of the Microsoft representative who is the ISV evangelist for Romania, there were no coherent arguments in favor of OOXML, with close to 10 people on the other side of the fence criticizing the spec and warning about the consequences of it being adopted.

After seeing that there is little chance of initiating a public discussion on the subject since the media is unaware or unwilling to touch it, two of us on the list got our small FOSS companies into the committee. The discussions on the mailing list proved that if arguments are researched and clearly presented some of those who had doubts and siding with OOXML are willing to change their minds.

The date of the local vote is not yet set by ASRO (Romanian Standards Organization) which apparently gives plenty of time to other companies to subscribe.

Today four have joined the committee, all of them seem to be MS partners (Fujitsu-Siemens is one of them, the others are local software companies). The sad thing is that these companies or people have not shown interest in the subject so far, have not participated in the 6 months online debate but are probably going to cast their vote in favor of OOXML . What they are doing is perfectly legal, after all anyone can join the committe, but it's sad to see attempts at public debate and the chances of it changing something getting offset by throwing money at the problem at the last minute.

I'll keep an update on how things are progressing and the results and details of the vote when it happens.

Understandably most governments will have no excuse of not choosing MSOffice and OOXML in future deployments when the lobbying resources of that camp are no longer countered by the fact that so far only ODF is an accepted ISO standard for office document formats. And that will be a setback for Linux desktops where a truly free and 100% compatible implementation of OOXML is unlikely to be available soon.

Up until now I was at most smiling at the lack of imagination and shameless plagiarism characteristic of spam authors, but today another one passed gmail's filters and made me laugh out loud for a good while as I read it over. Congrats to Jaja (spammer slash executioner), for the courage of not choosing to go with the crowd of credit card fraudsters who rely too much on luck and gullibility, and being proactive instead in trying to create a niche for himself and his boys.

Kiwilinux 8.03

The second and last release of Kiwi to be based on Ubuntu 7.10 is ready for downloading today.

Since 7.10 there are a few changes:

* German language packs are added in addition to English, Romanian and Hungarian
* Medibuntu repositories are activated by default, thus Skype, Google Earth and other packages are installable via Synaptic.
* Bugfix and security updates from the 7.10 archives are up to date as of March the 3rd
* There's a Zenity based tool on the LiveCD that helps restore a GRUB menu - enough people install Windows after Ubuntu and loose the ability to boot into it to make it worth adding.
* Inkscape was removed because of lack of space.

For those hearing for the first time about Kiwi: it is named after the fruit not New Zealand, and is the Ubuntu derivative that tries to stay as close as possible to Ubuntu while in the same time adding some features that commercial distros have, like multimedia support. Other notable changes from Ubuntu are the inclusion of the not-quite-free but in some parts popular Speedtouch 330 USB modem ADSL driver and Thunderbird and Audacious as the default mail and music apps.

It is i386, LiveCD, GNOME-only.

Sugar finally in Hardy universe!

I started moving Sugar (the GUI for the children's XO laptop) from the PPA into the main archives. It is aimed at people willing to try out or develop for Sugar but would rather not spend too much time with jhbuild and also a good way to set up a Sugar environment to collaborate with laptops already in your range. With Xubuntu already running on the Asus EEE these packages can be used to turn that laptop into a reasonable child's toy :)
If polished enough by release it could be installed on Edubuntu boxes that are used by younger children.

The core Sugar and a few activities are already there and testable if you run Hardy and have universe enabled:

$apt-get install sugar-emulator sugar-calculate-activity sugar-chat-activity sugar-connect-activity sugar-journal-activity sugar-logviewer-activity sugar-memorize-activity sugar-pippy-activity sugar-terminal-activity sugar-turtleart-activity sugar-web-activity

Then run sugar-emulator and try out the existing activities. Use F1 through F4 to switch between the four views, use Alt-q to quit.
To try out the collaboration facilities connect, chat and memorize at least work. You can run two or more emulators on the same machine by setting different SUGAR_PROFILE envvars for each for example
$SUGAR_PROFILE=pig sugar-emulator

To see other people on the net, those either with a similar emulator setup or actual XO hardware, you'll need to set the default jabber server on which to meet. Unfortunately the ones used for development are down right now, and others too are being swamped by existing users from the Give One Get One program.

The server can be set using the sugar-control-panel command. For the enterprising ones willing to set up your own ejabberd server the OLPC wiki has details. It involves patching ejabberd from svn, Ubuntu packages of it would be nice :)

Things that need work and help from existing MOTUs and packagers:

* the write activity needs Abiword 2.6 for its collaborative editing features and python bindings. I was told 2.6 is to be released by the end of February so hopefully it will get packaged by Debian or us before April.

* the etoys activity requires the Squeak Smalltalk environment. AFAIK Jordan Mantha is working on getting that into shape for Edubuntu 8.04.

* the TamTam sound editing activities and sound in general depend on Csound 5 . It was released in 2005 but Debian and Ubuntu still carry Csound 4 . It is a serious packaging task but it would me most welcome

* the read activity is based on a modified Evince, those patches would be nice to be upstreamed so no duplication occurs.

* there are also smaller tasks of packaging more activities. Some are in the NEW queue, some not yet uploaded and some not packaged properly but the above ones are more critical, as activities can be installed even without .debs by just unpacking the bundles under ~/Activities.

These are all tasks that take time to talk to upstreams and plenty of work but if you want to help let me know which part you're interested in.

critical mass and stuff

Yesterday I joined for the first time the monthly biker celebration ride that is being held since last September in Cluj-Napoca as the local critical mass event. It was a nice 15 minute ride of approximately 60 bikers around the city center. It is happening on the last Saturday of every month, and will probably attract more people as the word spreads and weather turns warmer.

Seeing this, and the recent news of China banning plastic bags prompted me to start reusing the existing plastic bags when at the market, and asking the merchants to not bother giving me a new one for every single item. They would just pile up and be thrown away after a single use, wasteful even though non-obvious.

O inițiativă promițătoare din partea domnului Constantin Teodorescu, secretar de stat MCTI : o invitație adresată celor de pe lista tic-lobby de a da feedback la o propunere de act normativ legat de aplicarea de mărci temporale ( timestamp) pentru documentele electronice.

Să sperăm ca observațiile de pe listă vor fi luate în seamă și că în viitor vom avea mai multe ocazii de a 'dezvolta' legislație. E ca și softul, o exprimare a unor idei abstracte într-un set de reguli și declarații, scrise pentru un tip de hardware distribuit și paralel: societatea :) Cum procesele care implică comunitatea au dat rezultate foarte bune, open source și Wikipedia fiind cele mai reușite exemple, ar trebui sa se poată aplica și aici atâta vreme cât participă persoane cu experiența și cunoștințele necesare.

Prezentare Linux la liceu

Azi am ținut o prezentare introductivă la liceul Avram Iancu din Cluj la un grup de 6-7 elevi și o profesoară dintre care doar un elev folosise Linux înainte, dar el era destul de în temă. Am vorbit de termenii de distribuție și filozofia FOSS comparate cu cele ale softului comercial și freeware, despre diferențe generale dintre un sistem Linux și Windows, despre grupul nostru local, și am arătat pe laptop o sesiune live Kiwi. Pe calculatoarele din laborator nu a pornit Ubuntu din cauză că aveau doar 256M de memorie :(

Au părut interesați, inclusiv de a-l instala pe unele din calculatoarele din școala și ne-am înțeles că ținem legatura. Au încercat și laptopul XO, și a avut succes ca de obicei :) apoi am împărțit CDuri cu Ubuntu 7.10 și stickere.

Ca primă prezentare la un liceu a ieșit bine - săptămâna trecută urma să prezint la liceul de info, dar când am ajuns la ora stabilită nu era nimeni, nici posterul pus și nici la mailuri nu au răspuns. Ciudat.

Sugar for Hardy PPA

To get Hardy testers, and in preparation of eventually uploading to Hardy universe I made a new Sugar team in Launchpad and put the Sugar packages in its PPA.

To test install sugar-emulator and sugar-activities, then run sugar-emulator.

The web browser activity is not working with the stock hardy xulrunner-1.9 will have to see if it's the same thing that was fixed in the Gutsy PPA or something else.

I was told that Edubuntu developers and upstream deb packagers of Squeak are planning on getting Squeak and possibly Etoys into 8.04. That would be really nice, as those bits I have not looked at at all so far, but they are an important part of the OLPC pre-installed software.

The music composition and sound synthesis activities - the TamTam family - need csound 5 which is newer than the older one in Ubuntu. I have seen it would be useful for UbuntuStudio as well, but not sure if anyone has started work on it.

If you have packaging skills and are interested in having Sugar on *buntu top notch for 8.04 feel free to join the team and lend a hand!

Testers on non-GNOME environments please let me know if some dependencies are missing. It's mostly GNOME/GTK/fd.o so minimalist desktops or KDE may not have everything pre-installed and the packages may lack a few depends fields.

Xubuntu/Sugar LiveCD

Having chased down the problem with xulrunner backtracing when used from the Sugar web browser activity, and having the correct package uploaded, the Sugar environment on Ubuntu became a lot more usable. PDFs or images can be downloaded from the web to the journal and viewed later on.

I made an update of most activities and they are available for 7.10 from the PPA

For those without Ubuntu 7.10 there's a new method for trying it all out: a Xubuntu 7.10 based live CD. There was plenty of free space on Xubuntu so nothing got removed. The sugar emulator is in the Applications/Others menu and can also be started as a desktop session if logging in again with user ubuntu and no password.

Since it is a normal Ubuntu liveCD it can be installed to the disk. It can also be run from a USB stick after converting the ISO image using as described in USB.README in the download directory.

Missing bits, help is welcome:
Squeak and Etoys need packaging as the Squeak in Ubuntu is too old I think.
The TamTam audio activities also need to be packaged, csound's python bindings are not in Ubuntu.

The plan is getting it all soon in Hardy universe so 8.04 has a working Sugar environment that can communicate with real XO laptops or Sugars on other computers. A use case I see is Edubuntu labs where the machines are shared between young and older students, and they can switch between Sugar and regular Edubuntu easily.

GSoC t-shirt and the other planet Ubuntu

The t-shirt sent by Google for participating as a mentor in the Summer of Code for Ubuntu this year has arrived today. It is really nice. Too bad the student did not pursue the project after the SoC ended, so there's nothing too useful to actually show users. Lesson learnt for possible next GSoCs.

I use Google Reader, but today checked out the planet.ubuntu.com page directly. In the right pane I discovered there's a planet for Ubuntu users, and the posts I read there I found more interesting on average than on this planet.

Sugar, now with SimCity

In the previous Sugar post I failed to mention (I did not know) that in order to install, you'll need to have gutsy-updates enabled as PPA packages are built against that. So if sugar was not installable because it required a newer libpango that was the reason.

The original SimCity game, which was recently open sourced and ported to the OLPC platform is now available as sugar-simcity-activity.
It does not blend quite as well into the Sugar UI as the others but it is playable :)

Sharing should work in the chat, connect and memory game activites at least. Not yet in Write, the abiword plugins are not packaged, I have to figure out how to build a package out of two orig.tgz-s as that is how abi2.6 plugins are built.

Try Sugar, the XO laptop's interface

If you want to see what the software on the XO machines looks like you can install Gutsy packages from my PPA

Install sugar-emulator and sugar-activities, then run sugar-emulator from the command line, and you can try out more or less the same educational software that Generation XO will soon be growing up with :) Even more, you can start collaborating with existing OLPC laptops that are now on the internet, or with others running the emulator. It's not a CPU emulator, the XO has an x86 Geode after all, but it's a nested X session.

You'll get a Xephyr window in which the Sugar environment will start. Use F1 through F4 to change the view modes. In F1 if you're online you'll see others and will be able to chat or play by sharing the respective activities. Alt-q quits the Sugar session.

You can run multiple sessions on the same box in the same time

$SUGAR_PROFILE=pig sugar-emulator
$SUGAR_PROFILE=cow sugar-emulator

then you can try out the collaboration support without a net connection.

About 20 activities are packaged and quite up to date with what is in current upstream git.

If you want to start testing or developing activities, the project's wiki has a good starting page for that.

You don't even need deb packages for an activity to try it out, just take the .xo file and unpack it under ~/Activities and will be picked from there. The .xo file is a zip file with the activity code, data and metadata, similar in concept to Java's jar files or Firefox extension xpi bundles.

The important ones that are lacking from my PPA are: Etoys and TamTam (needs csound python packaged) and the browser activity is unusable because of a xulrunner-1.9 bug in gutsy which has yet to be tracked down, and which makes pyxpcom fail. If someone feels like debugging this, the logviewer activity shows the exact traceback to get started from. Building xulrunner takes over an hour on my laptop and I am not familiar with the mozilla tree so help is appreciated. A build from upstream jhbuild works fine so there is hope for tracking down the patches or config options in ubuntu that create a different binary.

Packages besides Sugar that will be installed are libabiword2.6 and abi python bindings, newer version of telepathy-gabble and telepathy-salut (collaboration uses XMPP - Jabber) . The rest are from the Ubuntu archives.
