Xubuntu Edgy uses the system-config-printer GUI from Fedora for adding printers and configuring them. For Feisty another component has been taken from Fedora, hal-cups-utils. This is a combination of a CUPS backend (see /usr/lib/cups/backend) and a command which is invoked when a printer addition is detected by HAL. It is supposed to set up lp queues so there is less manual configuration to do. If the printer model is unknown it calls eggcups to prompt the user for help in choosing one. Eggcups is the third component of the Fedora printing tools and it is currently in the NEW queue but hal-cups-utils can be tested without it.
hal-cups-utils is in universe, not yet on the Xubuntu CD, but testing and feedback is appreciated
